• Ellington, ConnecticutUnder the direction of the camp leadership staff, counselors are responsible for executing the daily activities of Camp Indian Valley (Ellington, CT) and managing groups of 10-14 campers ages 5-15. YMCA Camp Indian Valley is a CT Licensed Summer Day Camp and is accredited by the American Camp Association. The camp serves 50 to 100+ campers on a weekly basis. Activities include daily swimming, sports, specialty camps (i.e. Survivor Week, Drama Performance Camp, Sports Camps, etc.), arts & crafts, group games, team building, nature study, family nights, skits, camp songs, drama, character development and more.
Summer Camp Counselors will be responsible for a small group of campers, ensuring they participate in activities in a safe, inclusive fashion and finding teachable moments throughout each day so that every camper leaves with a better sense of confidence and self-expression. Counselors are positive role models, leaders and friends, but understand professional child care boundaries as well. Each counselor will also either teach or assist with daily clinics and activities. Primary responsibility is to ensure the well-being of their campers. Counselors plan, carry out and support in activities designed to help build campers spiritually, mentally and physically.
HOURS:
- This position is a full-time (40 hrs/week) seasonal position.
- 40 hours of mandatory camp training will be held in June prior to the first day of camp. Some Saturdays and evenings are required. Training begins Monday, June 10 and is held primarily in the evenings until the start of camp.
- Camp is held from June 24-August 23 on M-F. Shifts may range anywhere from 7AM to 6PM.
- Monthly Family nights and evening staff meetings are requirements of the job.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be high school graduate to be considered unless a graduate of the Camp CIT Program, in which case applicants must be 16+.
- Prior experience working with children or groups preferred.
- Must meet all state licensing and accreditation requirement.
- Certification in CPR and/or First Aid preferred.
- Certification in Medication Administration and Epi-Pen Administration required during camp training.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Enjoys working outdoors and understands the potential hazards of an outdoor setting.
- Flexible, with the ability to adjust to varying situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
- Must be able to run, jump, and lift a minimum of 1/3 their own body weight
- Must be able to remain on feet and active for the duration of camp shift.
- Must be comfortable in the water on a daily basis, assisting with swim activities.
