Instructional Designer, Academic Extension

The Instructional Designer (ID) plays a crucial role at Sierra Nevada College by collaborating with many partners to provide engaging, relevant, and memorable learning experiences to students. The ID is also a significant business partner for academic operations. The position is full time and based in Incline Village, Nevada. The ID reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Extension.

Responsibilities:

General responsibilities include consulting with academic management and faculty on best practices with curriculum design, instruction, compliance (state authorization, ADA, etc.), and the effective use of teaching & learning technologies; ongoing development of online courses in a timely manner; one-on-one consulting and training for faculty; participating as a community member with academic departments; and providing administration of a LMS.

Other Responsibilities:

• Identify and plan content design strategies and objectives, curriculum, learning activities, and assessments based on analysis of tasks, learners, relevant and current subject matter, and context.
• Manage course development projects from planning through implementation in accordance with instructional design principles, including QM. Develop and manage SNC course development workflow and status. This includes clearly developed processes that guide course development, and templates to provide scaffolding for consistent design and student experience.
• Facilitate online course development using two models: 1. Instructional Designer as developer, and 2. Subject Matter Expert (SME) as developer with ID as consultant. Emphasis is on online courses with both models, while applying sound online pedagogy and QM standards.
• Lead efforts to develop an adjunct faculty support program including ongoing trainings, a web page with resources and other relevant information, semesterly orientation webinar, and semesterly newsletter, among other possibilities.
• Co-administer SNC Canvas.
• Create and deliver asynchronous and synchronous trainings for faculty; offer ongoing in person and webinar trainings on subjects such as Quality Matters, OSCQR, Canvas LMS, technology tools such as video, etc.
• Provide one-on-one consulting sessions for faculty, in person and through video conferencing.
• Develop materials for faculty such as online course instructional guides, master training documents, and facilitator guides.
• Confer with internal and external subject matter experts to identify and determine the needs of the course and the appropriate method of delivery, based on what the end-users need to learn.
• Assist subject matter experts in translating content knowledge into a course design map that leads to the final product of an online, in person, or hybrid course.
• Develop and publish interactive and engaging multimedia course content and instructional material for online delivery, including text, graphics, interactive elements, and rich media, using a variety of media and web content applications, audio, and video capture programs.
• Demonstrate and utilize effective needs analysis, project management, course development, and evaluation skills, as well as knowledge of how people learn, to facilitate improvement.
• Research and maintain an understanding of online design and teaching methods and tools. Explore knowledge of emerging technologies, tools, and trends in online education.
• Occasional travel to Academic Extension centers and conferences is required.

Requirements:

• Graduate degree in Education: Instructional Technology or related, or graduate degree and related certificate, from a regionally-accredited university. Learning theory should be part of the program of study.
• High commitment to serving faculty with patience, appreciation, and innovation.
• Well-developed social skills and relationship building.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
• Strong project management skills; ability to manage multiple course developments simultaneously.
• At least two years’ experience in instructional design, revision of online courses, and developing courses from master syllabus through duplication on a learning management system.
