Position Summary

Our Surgical Counselors are responsible for introducing and educating our patients on the cataract and LASIK surgery experience and are responsible for taking our patients through the process of preparing for the surgical day by coordinating scheduling, gathering needed documentation for pre-certification, providing patient education and knowledge of insurance carrier.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Counsel and educate the patient about their upcoming surgery and lens options
  • Set surgery dates, including all post-surgical/treatment appointments
  • Send necessary paperwork to authorization specialist for eligibility, benefits and authorization
  • Confirm pre-certification from insurance carriers received prior to procedure
  • Discuss implant options and self-pay fees including financing options
  • Collect fees for specialty lenses
  • Collect co-insurance or co-pays when applicable
  • Issue refunds for cancelled surgeries
  • Create H&P’s
  • Send for Medical or Retinal clearance as necessary
  • Obtain eyelid surgery authorizations
  • Answer patient calls
  • Send surgery operative notes, transfer of care letter, post-op form and post-op drop instructions to referring Optometrists (may be owned by Co-Man instead of Surgical Counselor)
  • QA surgery charts

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • At least two years of work experience in a medical office setting.
  • Prior Surgical Counseling experience preferred.
  • Previous sales background is required.
  • Knowledge of insurance carrier policies and procedures
  • Use of kindness, empathy and patience when dealing with our patient population
  • Attention to detail
  • Comfortable with sales aspect of specialty lenses
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Requires skills in operating computers, EHR, word processing software, fax machines and copier machines.
  • Cooperates and effectively communicates with all staff members and physicians about patient matters.
  • Word processing software, Microsoft Word.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy abbreviations
