Job Description

Alabama State University, Intercollegiate Athletics invites applications to fill the position of Athletic academic Advisor/Learning Specialist. This position reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Academics. The selected candidate will manage all aspects of academic support for student athletes on assigned teams; keep consistent and open communication with coaches and staff; and has a thorough understanding of NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference guidelines and regulations. The individual in this position works with student-athletes requiring academic skill development and individualized support of academic success plans.

Duties and responsibilities of this position:
Provide for the academic skill development needs and design individualized academic success plans for selected student-athletes;

Will monitor the academic progress of student-athletes on assigned teams;

Provide course advisement, academic support and career and personal guidance;

Educate student-athletes on rules of eligibility and personal responsibility;

Serve as a mentor to new student-athletes, schedule regular appointments and assist with developing daily and weekly academic objectives;

Utilize standard grade reports to communicate student athlete progress to appropriate constituents;

Monitor student-athletes NCAA academic eligibility;

Administer the guidelines for objective based study hall, tutorial services and report tracking system;

Communicate with coaches of assigned teams through scheduled academic meetings and share detailed information regarding the ongoing academic progress of assigned student-athletes;

Assist with the recruiting process during prospective student-athletes' visits to campus;

Make recommendations concerning improvement of programs and services, and performs other duties as assigned.

Make recommendations for assessments/testing of academic and educational development.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services, teaching, counseling or related education/experience required. Demonstrated work experience in learning assessment and developing individual academic success plans. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year for year basis.
