• Portland, MaineThe University of Southern Maine seeks applicants for a part-time (20 hours/week) position as ESOL Instructor/Program Assistant for the English for Speakers of Other Languages program on the Portland campus.
The ESOL Program Assistant will teach in the ESOL Program and assist the program director. The Program Assistant teaches one course each semester (fall, spring, and summer), assists with administration of the summer intensive program, and aids in responding to program inquiries. Other responsibilities include maintaining the program webpages, updating social media and promoting its use. In addition, the Program Assistant conducts outreach to faculty departments and the Learning Commons to promote courses, suggest resources as needed, and assist with training tutors to further support multi-lingual students.

Required:
- Master’s Degree, Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, or Bachelor’s Degree in related field and CELTA/ TESOL Certification.
- At least five years’ experience teaching composition and English for Speakers of Other Languages, including at least two semesters in a higher education setting.
- Strong understanding of higher education academic writing standards and analysis.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Expertise in ESOL pedagogy, academic writing, reading comprehension, and grammar and editing instructional methods.
- Experience with website development and social media administration.
- Valid Maine motor vehicle’s license
Preferred:
- Experience with Blackboard, or other online course platform, and other educational technology and social media tools.
- Knowledge of Greater Portland’s refugee and immigrant population.
