Overall responsibility: To provide transportation to the children enrolled in program by driving ministry van; tutor children and provide homework help three nights a week during the school year, and provide transportation, assistance, and supervision during the summer program for the children; assist at monthly Saturday play group; assist Child & Family Program Director in program development, planning, and record keeping; assist with communicating with schools, community agencies, and conducting home visits as needed; assist with communicating with families in program through monthly newsletter, phone calls, etc.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Transportation of children to and from program site
  • Tutor child(ren) on tutoring nights
  • Some van maintenance and cleaning, yard and light housekeeping as needed
  • Help maintain technology at site
  • Prepare monthly newsletter for mailing
  • Help plan activities for the monthly play group
  • Help supervise children’s activities at the monthly play group
  • Represent Ministry appropriately and positively to families, volunteers, and benefactors
  • Model healthy behavior for children at all times
  • Participate in continuing education and training such as topics related to Ministry policy, HIV/AIDS, poverty, and child/adolescent behavior
  • General assistance to the Child & Family Program Director as needed
  • In consultation with, and as requested by Child & Family Program Director, the Child Advocate shall also:
  • Monitor children’s academic progress weekly through online grade books where available
  • Assist with accurate record-keeping of attendance, parent or school phone calls and tutoring performance
  • Attend school meetings or conferences with Child & Family Program Director as needed
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of special events for families
  • Assist with the development and preparation of learning materials, including bulletin boards and learning games
  • Informally and formally assess children
  • Develop child specific academic and behavioral interventions
  • Assist with curriculum and program development
  • Develop activities that build self-esteem and life skills
  • Advocate for children/families in school and other settings
  • Assist with and be supportive of fundraising efforts
  • Assist with additional duties during holidays

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Education, Social Work, or related field
  • Clean BCI and driving record
  • Must pass a drug test and be drug free
  • Comfortable driving children in 12 passenger van
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds
  • Must be enthusiastic, child-centered, responsible, and hardworking
  • Must possess knowledge of, or have a willingness to learn about, trauma-informed care and special education
  • This position does require working one Saturday a month, and evening hours three nights a week during the school year (September-May)
