POSITION OVERVIEW

This position provides hands-on support to the plant Safety Manager and plant safety programs. The incumbent will be actively involved with injury prevention, safety policy compliance, employee safety training, and accident/injury/near miss investigation and documentation. This role is responsible for performing as a leader in the area of safety compliance on the third shift, training and mentoring all employees as necessary to drive a safe and compliant safety culture.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and all safety policies;

  • Maintain professional appearance and conduct, exhibiting a respectful and courteous demeanor at all times;

  • Attend shift production meetings and participate in pre-shift warm up exercises;

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of plant safety policies and is able to train other employees as required during the performance of the job;

  • Administers the presentation of safety and training programs at the time of new employee hire and annually as required;

  • Assists the Safety Manager with maintaining compliance with the Cardinal Safety Culture and OSHA Performance Evaluation (SCOPE) process as assigned;

  • Provides employees with information regarding safety violations and advises shift Supervisor and Safety Manager of same;

  • Makes recommendations to the Safety Manager for updating/revising plant safety and health programs as needed;

  • Monitors the first aid program during assigned shift, makes sure all injuries are documented, and helps the shift Supervisor determine when an accident requires the involvement of outside agencies;

  • Facilitates quarterly Emergency drills on assigned shift(s), acting as leader during all evacuations and maintains records;

  • Monitors and stocks the inventory of PPE, requisitioning replacements as needed.Assists with the safety shoe and prescription safety eyewear programs;

  • Promotes safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters, and/or specific training programs as assigned;

  • Monitors and ensures appropriate signage as it relates to Safety is maintained throughout the facility;

  • Performs and documents routine inspections as assigned;

  • Becomes patch proficient in production line job functions including glass handler/A-Frame/QC/Material Handler, training new hires and transfers on the safety aspects of the job;

  • While primarily a third shift position, the incumbent must have the ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, and be able to respond when needed at times other than usual shift assignment in an emergency;

  • Maintains work area in a manner that reflects appropriate housekeeping, including sweeping glass and debris from floors if needs dictate;

  • Attend mandatory meetings and continuing education sessions;

  • Communicate availability and completion of assigned duties to Safety Manager;

  • Participate in and support plant activities as they may occur.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Must have strong communication skills both written and verbal, and be able to readily share information on a daily basis with the Safety Manager, and as needed with the members of the management team;

  • The ability to speak in a group setting and explain requirements in a manner understood by others is essential;

  • The ability to remain calm under stressful situations coupled with the ability to confront others for non-compliance with safety policies is an ongoing requirement;

  • Will assist the shift Supervisor as necessary to implement corrective action procedures for non-compliance of safety policies;

  • Must have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality in regard to company and employee information, and be able to distinguish when information needs to be shared—and when it does not;

  • Will complete OSHA training courses as assigned by the Safety Manager, maintaining a working knowledge of the standards affecting the workplace;

  • Must have the ability to become a qualified trainer as assigned by the Safety Manager for Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) and other areas including but not limited to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), Contractor Program, and Overhead Cranes, assisting in maintaining appropriate training records;

  • Familiarity with Arizona Workers Compensation requirements to the extent necessary to conduct unbiased investigations, as well as discover, maintain, and preserve evidence in relation to workplace accidents;

  • Must be willing to serve as a First Aid Responder, following all universal precaution protocols and maintain certifications to do so, and advise Supervisor and employees regarding appropriate procedures for injury treatment;

  • < >roficiency with Microsoft office programs at a level that supports the ability to develop and maintain spreadsheets, develop power point presentations, and prepare memos and documents as needed in the performance of the job;

    Knowledge of EPA regulations in a manufacturing environment, or the ability to learn them.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree in Health and Safety or similar program containing subject matter that meets job requirements, coupled with experience as a trainer; OR

  • High school diploma/GED coupled with 2+ years’ experience working in a safety role within a manufacturing environment;

  • Prior experience in a leadership role very helpful.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Standing 6-12 hours per day on cement floor and anti-fatigue mat surfaces, with frequent walking and turning;

  • Requires the ability to hear and speak for interaction with employees and Supervisors;

  • Requires the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to minimize exposure to injury, which may include wristlets, kevlar-type coats or pullovers, neck protection, glove liners, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe shoes, goggles/face shields, hard hats, respiratory protection or other PPE as may be determined by policy;

  • Vision ability using close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus;

  • Employee may be exposed to moderate to loud noises depending on work location.PPE is provided;

  • Requires the ability to adapt to seasonal temperature changes while working in a non-air conditioned/non-heated warehouse-type environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • This is a mid-level administrative support position that reports directly to the Safety Manager.This position will work closely with the Supervisor on the assigned shift, cooperating in all areas at all times.There are no supervisory duties in the role, but the position will function as a leader in the role of health and safety at all times.
