Brief Job Summary

The lead teacher will be responsible for the general supervision and management of a class in accordance with the developmental needs of the children, educational philosophy and mission of the center.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • To maintain professional attitude and loyalty to center.

  • To plan, supervise and implement the class program according to center policies and procedures.

  • To arrive as early as necessary before scheduled starting time so as to allow time to gather materials and prepare class for the day’s activities.

  • To offer activities that meet the emotional, physical, social and intellectual needs of both the individual child and the group.

  • To submit a written lesson plan to the office per policy and in a timely manner.

  • To be responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, décor and learning environment of the classroom.

  • To assist in meeting the daily needs of the center to assure the highest quality of care to children.

  • To prepare a warm, nurturing and safe environment where self concepts are enhanced, independence encouraged and individuality respected.

  • To observe, record and report significant individual and group behavior.

  • To file accident/incident and any other reports when necessary and as required.

  • To establish and maintain positive communication with parents through newsletters, journals, parent conferences, special notes and on a daily informal basis.

  • To look for and draw out the talents and abilities of the assistant teacher and other team members, encouraging and aiding them to enjoy satisfying teaching experiences.

  • To assume with the assistant teacher an equal share of the joint classroom housekeeping and meal time responsibilities which include but are not limited to: wiping up spills, keeping table tops clean, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, take out the trash and close windows at end of school day.

  • To care for center property and classroom supplies as if they were your own, serving as a role model for teaching children respect for center property.

  • To be familiar and abide by the policies, procedures, rule and regulations of the center.

  • To see every child in the group as an individual, respecting his right to be himself and recognizing that each child’s experience is limited.

  • To be fair to every child whatever his personal limitations may be and to make an honest effort to “find something to love” in each, scrupulously avoiding favoritism.

  • To use positive discipline for teaching children how to act/ react in a socially acceptable manner.

  • To be consistent and fair by effectively communicating discipline methods with the assistant teacher and the parents.

  • To avoid discussion of the child in his/her presence.

  • To confine reports to parents to information about their child, taking care not to make comparisons or give any information about other children in the group.

  • To respect the parent’s rights and opinions as to what is best for their child. If this appears to be in conflict with center policy then explain tactfully and/or refer matter to director/assistant director.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.

  • Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language at a level that the parents and staff are able to understand and respond to what has been communicated.

  • Must have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.

  • Must be able to lift between 1 pound and forty-five pounds to a height of three and one half feet on a repetitive basis, i.e twenty to thirty times daily.

  • Must be able to: bend, stoop, squat and crouch to a child’s height in order to maintain eye contact at the child’s level; sit, kneel and crawl on the floor; climb to or reach children in any location within the school and on any piece of playground equipment if needed to assist a child.

  • PERSONNEL SUPERVISED: Assistant teacher, Aide, float

Qualifications

  • Must possess sensitivity and maturity and be able to demonstrate evidence of ability to relate well to both children and adults.

  • Must be willing to fulfill responsibilities and obligations according to the center’s educational philosophy and program as outlined in the Personnel Handbook, class outline and the policies and procedures of the center.

  • Must be professionally prepared as a teacher of young children, especially in the field of early childhood education/development or elementary education.

  • Must meet as applicable the licensing requirements and standards for certification.

Education

  • Knowledge of normal/abnormal growth and development throughout the age continuum.

  • Ability to provide, assess, interpret, and communicate age-specific data.

  • Must maintain adequate personal grooming consistent with professional appearance.

  • Must pursue education or training necessary to perform at the level of competence required to incorporate the hardware, software, technologies, and ideas relevant to specific job responsibilities.
