Positon Overview:
The position of CTE/IBCP Student Advisor prepares students for high school graduation and success in college or their careers. The CTE/IBCP student advisor guides students’ planning, participation and performance in a rigorous academic program that closely connects to their aspirations and their college and career goals. As a certificated staff member, the CTE/IBCP advisor contributes to school wide improvement efforts and activities that support the effective operation of the school through school-based support for the maintenance and implementation of the International Baccalaureate Career-related Program (IBCP). The CTE/IBCP advisor is instrumental in facilitating students’ progress and success by ensuring that appropriate collaborative support mechanisms are in place.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop and implement strategies to facilitate the successful transition to Career Pathways from eighth grade to high school.
- In collaboration with students, teachers and parents, ensure that each student in the advisor’s defined caseload develops an ECAP specific to his/her interests, talents and aspirations.
- Assist students in planning and scheduling their CP course of study, including choices for DP courses and all elements of the CP core.
- Provide ongoing exposure to the information and experiences necessary to make informed decisions when selecting a CTE postsecondary program or career.
- Create and implement orientation programs for students and parent, outlining expectations, procedures, policies and criteria for students’ successful completion of the CTE and CP programs.
- Promote preparation and participation in college and career assessments and facilitate students’ understanding of results.
- Connect students to school and community resources to help ensure the successful transition from high school and enrollment in post-secondary education.
- Collaborate with the school on program data to assess student progress and make recommendations to improve student achievement.
- Support the 504 referral, evaluation, and accommodation processes for students in one’s caseload.
- Assist students in crisis situations, and refer to district or community resources when appropriate.
- Contribute to and support school improvement efforts.
- Remain current with federal, state and district law/policies related to guidance functions, including, but not limited to, FERPA, child abuse reporting and graduation requirements.
- Remain current with postsecondary career and college opportunities.
- Remain current with changes in college admission and financial aid criteria.
- Contribute to development and communication of industry partnerships for students including mentorships, credit-bearing mentorships, and job-shadowing experiences.
- Work with all CTE teachers and CTE at district level to promote IB Career Program
- Oversee all core components of the IB Career Program.
a.) Service Learning
i) CP students need to have some of their activities relate to their career field of study
ii) CP Manager should read and respond to student reflections on experiences
iii) Keep up with CP students’ Service Learning in ManageBac.
b.) Reflective Project
i) Inform CP students about Reflective Project guidelines and deadlines
ii) Inform all CTE teachers about their responsibilities as CP Reflective Project mentors for their own
students’ reflective projects
iii) Ensure that each CP student completes the required forms and reflections for the
Reflective Project throughout the two-year program
iv) Coordinate Reflective Project work time and meetings with mentors through the Personal and
Professional Skills teacher
c.) Language Development Portfolio
i) Check monthly progress on the Language Development Portfolio\
ii) Solicit support as needed for students who need it
iii) Meet with students quarterly to set goals on language development, ensuring that some focus on
the careerfield is included
- Help promote a better understanding of the IB CP school-wide and throughout the community.
- Ensure that all CP faculty have access to the OCC and understand how to use the resources.
- Keep teachers and administrators informed of current CP developments.
- Provide advice and support to teachers in regards to best IB practices and the CP.
- Attend IB workshops and professional development activities.
- Arrange for new teacher induction into CP, providing information and resources of all relevant aspects of the program including the Approaches to teaching and learning.
- Organize regular meetings for discussion, planning, and collaboration for CRS and DP teachers.
- Participate in the selection of CP staff.
- Organize and direct procedures for CP authorization and the 5-year CP program evaluation.
- Meet with CP faculty to ensure that the program is well implemented and monitored.
- Set and inform all staff of assessment deadlines and the procedures for the CP.
- Maintain copies of all CP correspondence with the IBO, including forms, documents and reports.
- Ensure that appropriate textbooks, resources and facilities are available.
- Other duties as assigned by school administrators.
Qualifications:
State of Arizona School Guidance Counselor certification. Teaching experience preferred. Applicants must have on fil in the Human Resources Department a copy of the appropriate valid certificate or evidence of eligibility to b appropriately certificated by the Arizona Dept of Education.
- Emphasis will be given to evidence about the applicant which indicated:
a) Knowledge of CTE programs, postsecondary options, financial aid and scholarship opportunities
b) Thorough understanding of high school graduation requirements and ability to evaluate transcripts.
c) Knowledge of best practices for dropout prevention, credit recovery and increasing graduation rate.
d) Ability to develop and successfully implement school-level efforts to increase the graduation rate, decrease the dropout rate
and increase postsecondary enrollment
e) Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with all stakeholders
f) Ability to prioritize and manage a variety of responsibilities.
g) Skill in effective decision making.
h) Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, students, parents/guardians and outside agencies.
i) Willingness to accept and effectively manage change.
