The Assistive Technology Specialist position is responsible for serving as liaison between Department of Rehabilitation and school systems to handle student assistive technology needs; providing assistive technology consultation and assessment to students; developing a written assistive technology report, including specifications on recommend AT intervention; documenting work in case management databases, timesheets, and paper files; working with school staff, ADRS counselors, and when necessary rehab engineers, to implement the assistive technology recommendations to meet the student’s needs; providing set-up, fitting, training, and technical support on AT devices; participating in quality improvement and quality assurance activities, and providing guidance, information, and assistance on assistive technology services; marketing assistive technology services to schools and other agencies; creating and maintaining a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and strong team orientation; and maintaining knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature and attending related seminars and conferences to obtain pertinent new knowledge to performance of job responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, special education, educational technology, rehabilitation counseling, vocational evaluation, physical or occupational therapy, vision rehabilitation therapy, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university
2. Minimum of two years of work related experience in providing special education or assistive technology services
OR
1. Master’s degree in rehabilitation engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, special education, educational technology, rehabilitation counseling, vocational evaluation, physical or occupational therapy, vision rehabilitation therapy, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university

3. Ability to travel extensively in personal automobile throughout Alabama
4. Must submit to a criminal history background information check including but not limited to FBI and ABI record repositories

1. Knowledge of learning, physical, and sensory impairments and rehabilitation practices
