The Instructional Designer and Teaching Consultant collaborates with faculty on all aspects of course design: needs assessment, identification of learning goals and objectives, identifying teaching strategies, creation of learning activities, and assessment of student learning. The Instructional Designer and Teaching Consultant works with a variety of learning modalities, including face-to-face, online and blended, and consults with faculty to offer alternative teaching strategies and methods based on course goals, the context and constraints of the course, and faculty’s approach to teaching. The Instructional Designer and Teaching Consultant’s recommendations are informed by available educational technologies, appropriate teaching techniques, and the latest evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes. The Instructional Designer and Teaching Consultant, is knowledgeable about pedagogy and adult learning theory and advocates for student-centered learning. Strong relationships with faculty members are essential to this position, and establishing trust and maintaining confidentiality are important components of these faculty relationships. The Instructional Designer and Teaching Consultant actively contributes to the MGH Institute of Health Profession’s efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive campus community.

The Instructional Designer and Teaching Consultant reports to the Director of the Library and Instructional Design in the Office of the Provost.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

60% Provides confidential one-on-one consultation with faculty on a range of course design topics to improve student-learning outcomes:
  • Plan new courses or revise existing courses
  • Design courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments
  • Develop strategies to encourage meaningful student engagement and interactivity
  • Suggest techniques for creating collaborative and active learning activities
  • Encourage improvements in course design, delivery methods, and course materials
20% Develops and delivers workshops and events to assist faculty in improving course design:
  • Promote collaboration and establish partnerships with faculty and departments to support workshops and events.
  • Develops text and web-based support materials to assist faculty in improving their teaching skills
10% Participate on Institute and program committees to provide instructional support/faculty development representation:
  • Advise on design and/or re-design of programs and curricula
  • Support special projects and initiatives requiring teaching and learning expertise
10% Keep current with instructional design best practices:
  • Evaluate new, evidence-based teaching and learning methodologies
  • Attend local, regional, or national conferences
  • Identify new opportunities to support teaching and improve student learning
Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Library and Instructional Design, Office of the Provost

Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in the field of instructional design or a related field within education preferred.
  • Three to five years experience with instructional design for adult learners, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience with one or more learning management systems for course development and/or teaching.
  • Experience facilitating workshops desired.
  • Experience teaching college level courses desired
