Job purpose
Life Skills Instructors are the front line service providers for goal-oriented services authorized by the Medicaid Waiver program. Services are intended to assist individuals to acquire, retain, and improve the self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills necessary to live successfully in home and community-based settings. These services must be individually tailored, and may include personal care and protective oversight and supervision, in addition to skills development.

Physical requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and speak and hear clearly. The noise level in the work environment varies low to high. The job requires the ability to walk, climb stairs, kneel, stoop, and may require lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include, close vision, color vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. The job may require extended periods of sitting or standing. The employee may be required to work long hours, occasional nights and/or weekends. The employee must regularly interact with co-workers and the public.

Responsibilities
- Mentor/Teach/Support skills and behaviors necessary to achieve success in the individual’s environment of choice
- Know and follow the Plan of Care in regards to the Individual’s goals and approved service limits
- Complete required documentation in the specified time allowed as per agency procedure and state regulations; including necessary descriptive details to support the work provided and the time utilized for each service period
- Adhere to supervisor provided work schedules and immediately communicate any need to vary from schedule to the supervisor; such as illness, emergency, family requested change
Conditions to maintain employment
- Provide care to individuals without discrimination to race, sex, age, or disabling condition.
- Provide care to individuals in a respectful manner and support their dignity and self-affirmation.
- Read written instructions and make appropriate entries regarding services in the individual’s Therap record.
- Maintain good communication with supervisor, individual and caregiver.
- Use sound judgement in dilemmas and emergencies if the caregiver or supervisor are unavailable.
- Know and follow all agency policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Must be at least at least 18 years of age and possess a high school or general education development (GED) diploma
- Possess a current CPR/1st Aid Certificate, or be willing to obtain one within 30 days of hire
- Possess and maintain a valid Alaska driver’s license and have a reliable vehicle that meets minimum State of Alaska insurance requirements
- Be able to pass a Background Check that meets State of Alaska requirements

- Cope with emergencies in a calm and efficient manner
