Researchers in the College's over 280 laboratories are served by state-of-the-art core research facilities and research support facilities. Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Iowa City is less than four hours from Chicago and within five hours of Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Kansas City, readily accessible via interstate highways and a regional airport 30 minutes away.

Position Summary: Contribute to the success of the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation by overseeing the functions of the histology laboratory to support the research missions of the department.

Position Responsibilities:
Research: Coordinate and manage multiple research projects within the histology lab; direct the work of the team, manage priorities for the department, and interface with PIs from research labs and faculty and staff from the department.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations: Manage research projects/programs, support and conduct complex research and direct all phases of the project and services
Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications: May contribute to the histology lab as evidenced by documented recognition in publications as an author or for technical assistance. May develop new methodology and techniques related to histology. May perform complex statistical analysis of data using advanced statistical methods and tools.

Administrative and Project Management: Manage the histology research lab. Manage the operational, fiscal and HR/staffing activities for the lab. Manage complex processes, external relationship development, and project/process leadership. Oversee the planning and preparation of budgets. Perform cost analysis and set prices. Assure safety and compliance; respond to compliance and safety violations.

Facilities and Equipment Management: Prepare short and long-term plans for all aspects of the research lab.

Supervision/Staffing: Collaborate with human resources personnel to hire new staff. Track completion of performance evaluations by their supervisors. Ensure staff compliance with UI policies and procedures. Develop and implement policies and procedures that support staff engagement in the workplace.

Education Required
Master’s Degree in a related field, or equivalent education and experience

3 years of histology experience
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Supervisory experience
Experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
