    Duties

    Summary

    The Physician Assistant (PA) will provide consultative services on patients referred from other sections of the hospital and/ or affiliated VA outpatient clinics and perform administrative function and other tasks as assigned the Section Chief for Cardiology Service. The PA will provide expertise in the detection and treatment of various heart related diseases.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent is expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. The incumbent should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. Incumbent is responsible for work up and referral for heart transplant consideration.
    Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
    1. Coordinates the care of the Cardiology patients inclusive of assessment, treatment and education
    2. Attends sub-specialty clinics including: general cardiology, arrhythmia, pulmonary hypertension, and preventive cardiology while screening consults for appropriate clinics and performing procedures such as Treadmill Stress Testing, ICD and pacemaker interrogations and evaluations
    3. Assists in the design/implementation of delivery systems/programs to facilitate the care of Cardiology patients and evaluate effectiveness of studies related to the delivery of care and services to Cardiology patients
    4. Participates in cardiology programs as they relate to organizational goals, in performance improvement activities and in-servicing of nurses
    5. Monitors for cardiology therapeutic IV infusions (predominantly for pulmonary hypertension patients)
    6. Tracks laboratory data to assess tolerability and toxicity of patients receiving pulmonary hypertension medications with high risk of adverse reactions
    7. Requests appropriate post-operative diagnostic procedures and consultative services as needed
    8. Consults with physician staff and utilize consultation services when appropriate
    9. Conducts and evaluates health teaching programs to patients, their families and staff, both individually and in group settings while acting as a consultant to nursing personnel and other disciplines
    10. Involved in developing and implementing policies, standards and programs to support and advance the clinical setting
    11. Responsible for implementing and maintaining a patient and staff education and training program in conjunction with nurse educators and managers for management of continuous IV pump infusions.

    Work Schedule: Generally, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The specific tour of duty will be determined based on the needs of the service line and the candidate. Some weekend and holiday coverage anticipated.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/02/2019. .

    Basic Requirements :
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Education. The candidate must meet the following:(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
    • Certification. (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.(3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
    • Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, Part II, Appendix A.
    • English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
    Preferred Experience: Demonstrated ability to work with Orthopedic surgeons and residents and other midlevel providers and a strong commitment to the vision of the VA - Care of the Veteran, teaching and research; and the ability to work with Providers from all other specialties.

    Grade Determinations : PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
    FULL GRADE - None beyond the basic requirements.

    INTERMEDIATE GRADE -
    Experience/Education
    (a) 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or
    (b) Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
    (c) A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    SENIOR GRADE -
    Experience / Education
    (a) 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or
    (b) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
    (c) 2 years of professional practice as a PA and a Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or
    (d) A Doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.

    CHIEF GRADE
    Experience/Education
    (a) Generally, an individual in this grade is able to demonstrate the behaviors listed in the areas below after 5 years of professional practice as a PA; and,
    (b) The minimum education for this grade is a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the Master's degree where the individual has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully undertaken a combination of difficult or complex assignments in several clinical, administrative, research and educational arenas which required a high degree of competence.

    Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, lifting light loads, assisting patients with positioning and transfers. Must be able to use a computer to input orders, review reports etc. Must be able to communicate directions and patient orders. Light lifting (under 15lbs), light carrying (under 15lbs), use of fingers, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability, working closely with others, working alone, and working with bio hazardous materials.
