Posting Summary

The Writing Program at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is pleased to invite applications for the position of teaching instructor. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track teaching position, with a start date of September 1, 2019. The initial contract is for a period of one year with the possibility for reappointment. Starting salary for the 2019-2020 academic year is $56,169 plus health and retirement benefits, and eligibility for conference travel grants.

Teaching instructors typically teach a 21 credit course load over the academic year, typically 12 credits in the Fall and 9 credits in the Spring, with no more than 22 students per section. Writing Program faculty begin by teaching Expository Writing, the course required of all Rutgers students, and/or its preparatory course, Basic Composition. In both courses, students compose a sequence of analytic essays in which they develop original interpretive positions derived from synthetic analysis of nonfiction texts. Instructors who are reappointed after their initial contract may go on to teach advanced courses in Research in the Disciplines, Business and Technical Writing, etc. Faculty benefit from regular meetings with Writing Program directors, as well as pedagogy workshops and other professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Successful candidates will be strong writers who demonstrate commitment to – and excellence in – teaching at the college level. An advanced degree (e.g. Ph.D., Ed.D., M.F.A., or M.A.) is required. Preferred qualifications include three or more years teaching composition or other writing-intensive courses as instructor of record; experience teaching English-language learners or international students; and evidence of institutional service promoting equity and diversity.

Successful candidates must be available to attend in-person faculty training August 26–30, 2019.
