JOB DESCRIPTION
Paraeducator - Special Needs (PALS, CLAS & Specialized Assistance)
Purpose Statement
The job of Paraeducator - Special Needs (PALS, CLAS and Specialized Assistance) is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with special needs students; assisting certified teachers in supporting the learning programs for student in their designated educational environment; monitoring and reporting student behavior and performance; and assisting students with personal and/or health care needs.
This job reports to the Supervising Teacher evaluated by the Principal.
Essential Functions
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
  • Administers immediate first aid, oxygen and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional, and after attending training, for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs.
  • Administers classroom assignments, tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process.
  • Assists with record keeping, correcting papers, filing, weekly progress reports, documenting, and copying materials as needed for the purpose of gathering and maintaining data.
  • Assists in obtaining, organizing and using supplies, books, materials, and equipment as assigned for the purpose of maximizing student learning.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required (e.g. enrolling students, record keeping, working with all classroom teachers, filing paperwork, organizing rooms, duplicating, laminating, correcting papers, etc.) for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Confers with teachers to assist in the evaluation of student progress for the purpose of achieving student success.
  • Documents student’s daily activities (e.g. behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) for the purpose of making data driven decisions.
  • Employs and supports appropriate de-escalation and restraint techniques (e.g. MANDT, etc.) for the purpose of maintain a safe environment.
  • Guides students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments and personal interactions for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic, personal, and behavioral goals.
  • Implements various levels of discipline in accordance with school district and building policies for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Maintains classroom equipment, work area, and manual and electronic files and records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing written reference, providing a safe learning environment, and/or meeting mandated requirements.
  • Models conversations, manners, active listening, organizational skills and everyday interaction to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner for the purpose of aiding student development of interpersonal skills and successful problem solving strategies.
  • Monitors and adheres to student’s daily schedule and behavior plan for the purpose of ensuring consistency and academic/behavioral success.
  • Monitors and supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunch room, bus loading/unloading, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Provides verbal feedback and/or written documentation for the purpose of informing teacher of students’ progress.
  • Provides for general personal health care needs after completing specialized training (e.g. diapering, tube feeding, toileting, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the individual needs of the students.
  • Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, child abuse and/or neglect, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate and/or instructional personnel.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practiced; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; supervision; and use of technology.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; age appropriate activities; and English grammar/punctuation/spelling/vocabulary.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions; adaptability/flexibility; handle physically and emotionally able to control stressful, verbal, physical, situations; and multitasking.

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.
Experience Job related experience is desired.
Education High school diploma or equivalent.
