McKinney-Vento Family Counselor / Social Worker (K-12)
Overview
The McKinney-Vento Family Counselor assists students and families in transition that have qualified for support services via The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act. To ensure that homeless children and unaccompanied youth have access to a free, appropriate public education, comparable to that provided to the children of any Arizona resident.
Qualifications
- Valid Arizona Guidance and Counseling Certificate / Social Worker
- Computer proficiency to include use of basic software applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to work well with diverse groups of people
- Possess good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate with co-workers and other service providers
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines while working with frequent interruptions and minimum supervision
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required
Duties and Responsibilities
- Increasing awareness for all MPS school employees regarding the rights and resources for students who are in transition and are homeless as defined by McKinney-Vento statues.
- Conduct training for MPS employees on McKinney-Vento student rights and district procedures.
- Assisting families and students in transition to qualify them for support services.
- Assisting students with resources for transportation.
- Provide counseling services or assist student in accessing counseling services.
- Networking with local shelters and other community service agencies.
- Provide case management to provide intervention supports to meet individual student needs.
- School site and department visits to reinforce the goals of the McKinney-Vento Act in relationship to how it can benefit students and better enable them to access a well-rounded education under ESSA.
- Tracking attendance of students and providing supports for those students that are struggling with attendance issues.
- Networking with counselors and office staff at school sites for identification of qualifying students and assist them to access services.
- Provide personal contact with parent/guardian when possible to connect them with resources within the community service as needed.
- Log, track, generate reports and documentation regarding McKinney-Vento eligible students.
- Work with unaccompanied youth to access resources concerning health, housing, clothing, counseling or other areas of concern.
- Work with high school seniors to provide post-secondary education options and planning.
- Work with students in transitions from elementary to junior high.
- Use of technology and software when appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality in sensitive matters.
- Other duties as assigned.
